ABSTRACT

Domestic violence’s aftermath may be grave and persistent. It is a pattern of behaviour that involves physical, emotional, sexual, and psychological abuse by an intimate partner or family member.

According to statistics, one in three women worldwide has experienced physical or sexual violence from an intimate partner, and this is just the tip of the iceberg, as many incidents go unreported or unnoticed. Domestic violence can take many forms, from hitting, slapping, and choking, to emotional manipulation, verbal abuse, and financial control. It can occur in marriages, dating relationships, same-sex partnerships, and between family members, including parents, siblings, and children. Domestic violence regularly follows an unending cycle that includes patterns of exploitation, contrite apologies, and pledges to amend one’s ways which inevitably end in more abuse. Liberating oneself from the ceaseless entrapment of victimhood can prove strenuous.

Enduring and detrimental outcomes may result from domestic violence. Physical violence can cause bruises, fractures, internal injuries, and even death, while emotional abuse can lead to depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Victims of domestic violence will always suffer in silence, feeling ashamed, guilty, or afraid to speak out. They may also face barriers to seeking help, such as a lack of resources, cultural norms, or fear of retaliation from the abuser. This type of domestic violence is not only practised in India but also around the world in some other cases but may not be in the same type. In this article, we will be discussing domestic violence around the world and the legal issues around it in brief.
